Dear Small Business Member,
Because you're a member of the Sam's Club family, and an important contributor to our local community, we want to make sure that you are aware of issues that could affect your business. For example, there is a bill currently under consideration in the Texas House of Representatives that would help change the unfair competitive advantage that online-only retailers have over brick-and-mortar retailers, like you.
As you may know, certain online-only retailers do not collect sales tax on Internet purchases made to Texas consumers, despite the fact that the tax is still due. This gives online-only retailers anywhere from a 5-10 percent price advantage over brick-and-mortar stores in your community that hire local workers, pay payroll, income and property taxes to state and local government, and get involved in the community. It also means that the state of Texas is losing out on significant revenue from the collection of online sales tax that could help close critical budget gaps.
Fortunately, legislation was recently introduced by Texas State Rep. John Otto (R-Dayton) that would require companies with a physical presence in the state to collect sales taxes. HB 2403 was recently approved by the Texas House Ways and Means Committee, and now awaits a full House vote. You can make your voice heard on this important issue.
Urge members of the House to support HB 2403, and create a fair marketplace in Texas.
